The Miami Dolphins entered the eve of the Super Bowl on the cusp of potentially having their own “super” evening last night. Miami had several possible awards and honors in play as the NFL convened for their 10th annual NFL Honors event, putting a bow on the 2020/2021 NFL season ahead of today’s Super Bowl. The list of possibilities for Miami was endless. Brian Flores was a finalist for the NFL’s Coach of the Year award. Long-time Miami Dolphin Zach Thomas was a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame for the second straight year. Dolphins super fan Ian “Big E” Berger was among the league’s three finalists for Fan of the Year. And Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard had a strong case for Defensive Player of the Year.

There was plenty of action for the Dolphins to get in on; until suddenly there wasn’t. Berger missed out on Fan of the Year honors to the representative for the Titans. Brian Flores was an “also-ran” for Coach of the Year, understandable once his team missed the playoffs. Zach Thomas was shorted once again as the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2021 was deferred to three first-ballot additions: Peyton Manning, Calvin Johnson and Charles Woodson.

Each of these were understandable. But the other two modern-era additions included Alan Faneca (with 9 Pro Bowls and 6 All-Pro honors, we get this one too) and Bucs safety John Lynch. Lynch has been on the ballot for years and now, with the Super Bowl in Tampa Bay and the Buccaneers in the big game, Lynch is conveniently inducted ahead of Thomas despite having no accolades that would warrant such an honor. Lynch, a big-hitting safety, finished his career with 4 less defensive touchdowns than Zach Thomas had. And Zach Thomas had 4. Thomas logged 17 interceptions to Lynch’s 26 — a respectable discrepancy give Thomas was a middle linebacker. But Thomas had more sacks (20.5 to 13), an equal number of forced fumbles (16), twice led the league in tackling (Lynch never led the league in a single category defensively).

Oh, right. And Thomas has five first-team All-Pro honors to his name. Lynch has two. Topping it all off, the Hall of Fame’s All-2000s team includes Zach Thomas; where as Lynch did not represent the Buccaneers on either the 1990s roster or the 2000s roster. You’d have a hard time selling the case that Lynch had a more accomplished or illustrious career than Thomas, other than Lynch winning a Super Bowl with the Bucs in 2002.

But that doesn’t even get into the Dolphins’ most egregious snub of the night. Xavien Howard finished third in the AP voting for Defensive Player of the Year behind Aaron Donald and Pittsburgh’s TJ Watt. The voting distribution?

Three votes? Is it safe to say the AP voters don’t have NFL Sunday Ticket and the Dolphins were simply never on for them to watch? But even then, how hard is it to box score scout Howard’s season in 2020 and not have immense respect for how good he was? 10 interceptions is the highest figure the league has seen since 2007. And Howard’s other statistics were on par with those of Stephon Gilmore, who won the same award last year — beating out Donald (who had a statistically more impressive season in 2019 than he did in 2020).

Three votes for Howard is, quite frankly, a joke. But alas this is the price the Dolphins will continue to pay for their long-time dance with mediocrity. The pundits may have caught notice of the Dolphins in 2020 thanks to a 10-win team and the polarizing discussion around rookie QB Tua Tagovailoa, but it is quite clear that the Dolphins aren’t taken seriously just yet. A few more winning seasons should do the trick — but it is a damn shame that Howard’s brilliance in 2020 was so lost on so many. Especially the 47 AP voters who cast a vote for someone other than Howard for Defensive Player of the Year.
